Google Sheets
Connect a Google account to work with the spreadsheets it can edit. metamorphOS can read a single cell or a header row with the rows below it, append rows, overwrite or clear a range, and add a new tab.
What you can do
- Read: get the values of a range, from one cell up to a whole table with its header.
- Write: append rows below an existing table, or overwrite the cells of a range.
- Clear: empty the cells of a range. Formatting and the tab stay.
- Tabs: add a new tab to a spreadsheet, with a name you choose or named after the current time.
Before you start
You need a Google account that can edit the spreadsheets your processes will use, and access to the Google Cloud Console so you can create a project and OAuth credentials. To let others connect while the app is in testing, you also need to add them as test users.
Set up Google
All provider-side setup happens in the Google Cloud Console (https://console.cloud.google.com ).
- Create or select a project. In the project picker, create a new project
(for example,
metamorphOS) or select an existing one. The remaining steps apply to that project. If you already set up Google Drive for metamorphOS, you can use the same project. - Enable the Sheets API. Go to APIs & Services → Library, search for Google Sheets API, open it, and choose Enable.
- Configure the consent screen. Go to APIs & Services → OAuth consent screen. Choose the user type (External unless this is a Google Workspace-internal app), then set the app name, support email, and developer contact. While the app is in Testing, add the Google accounts that will connect as Test users.
- Create OAuth credentials. Go to APIs & Services → Credentials → Create credentials → OAuth client ID, choose application type Web application, and give it a name. On save, Google shows a Client ID and Client secret; copy both now, as the secret is only shown here.
- Add the redirect URL. On the same client, under Authorized redirect URIs, add the callback URL metamorphOS gives you in the connect flow. It must match exactly.
Connect in metamorphOS
Activate the Google Sheets connector from the marketplace and add an account. Enter the Client ID and Client secret from the step above, then start the connect flow: metamorphOS sends you to Google to sign in and approve access, and Google returns you to metamorphOS once you consent. You can disconnect an account at any time to revoke access.
Addressing a spreadsheet
Every action needs the spreadsheet ID and, except for adding a tab, a range.
- The spreadsheet ID is the part of the spreadsheet’s URL between
/d/and/edit. - The range is in A1 notation and names the tab:
Orders!A1:J1is the first row of the tabOrders,Orders!B2is one cell. Put a tab name in single quotes when it contains spaces or starts with a digit:'Q3 Orders'!A1:C10. - Enter the range as you would type it in Google Sheets. metamorphOS encodes it for the request.
A typical table flow reads the header, appends a row below it, and reads the result back:
Good to know
- The connector can read and change every spreadsheet the connected account can edit, not only the ones metamorphOS creates.
- Values are read as the text shown in the sheet. When writing, values are
interpreted as if typed into the sheet by default, so numbers, dates, and formulas
starting with
=are recognised. Choose RAW to store them exactly as sent. - Append adds new rows by default, so content below the table moves down. Choose OVERWRITE to fill the empty rows after the table instead.
- Clearing a range does not delete the tab. Deleting tabs or spreadsheets, formatting, charts, and sharing are outside this connector’s scope.
